Does The Medicare Savings Program Eliminate my Part B LEP?

Medicare Savings Programs help pay your Medicare costs if you have limited income and savings. Additional benefits of enrolling in an MSP include:

  •   Allowing you to enroll in Medicare Part B outside of the usual enrollment periods.
  •   Eliminating your Part B late enrollment penalty, if you have one.

There are three main MSPs, each with their own eligibility criteria:

  1.  Qualifying Individual (QI).
  2.  Specified Low-income Medicare Beneficiary (SMLB).
  3.  Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB).

MSPs also have income and asset limits, which vary by state. Contact your local Medicaid office or the SHIP in your state for more information about MSPs in your state and for help applying. Visit www, or call 877-839-2675 to contact your SHIP. If you enroll in the MSP, your Part B LEP will be eliminated. You will not have an LEP even if you later lose MSP eligibility.
